- Harry Wayne Owen is an Atlanta-based sculptor, woodcarver and painter. Born and raised in Virginia’s Tidewater region, he began drawing and painting at an early age. He worked as an advertising art director in television and for ad agencies and is now a partner in an Atlanta advertising creative services company. His popular walking sticks are hand-carved on a commission basis from local, sustainably harvested wood prunings, including dogwood, pecan, oak and walnut. He also works in exotic woods. Past commissions have featured druids, historical features, dolphins, dogs, a giraffe, a bear, a crescent moon and a series of pythons. I like this giraffe but he makes me nervous. Like if I owned him, I'd lose my balance and break his legs. Which would be a terrible fate for him to suffer. If this were my walking stick, it would be for show only.
Terry, no need to worry, it's made from very strong oak. Besides, Walking sticks should be out hiking, not standing in corner somewhere collecting dust.
